About Port Talbot
Port Talbot is a town in West Glamorgan, in South Wales with a population of around 36,000. During medieval times, the local area was centred around the market town and port of Aberavon now a district of Port Talbot. During the 18th and 19th century the Talbot family, who were major land owners in the area, developed much of the area and by the close of the 19th century had formed the Port Talbot Railway and Docks Company. In 1921 the borough of Port Talbot was created as an administrative entity.
Today Port Talbot is a major centre of manufacturing, in particular in the steel and electronics industries. It is also an important retail centre for its population and the surrounding area with a variety of local and national shops. In recent years, considerable investment has been made in developing Port Talbot's town centre shopping areas and the Aberafan Shopping Centre, which houses more than 60 shops and stores.
Port Talbot is in an area of natural beauty. The Brecon Beacons National Park and the golden sands of the South West Wales Coast are near by. Bordering onto the Brecon Beacons, the Vale of Neath has some truly spectacular waterfalls earning it the name "Waterfall Country", while the green thickly wooded landscape of the Afan Valley is known locally as "Little Switzerland".
